On May 4th 2016, ILM and ArtStation.com announced the first ILM Art Department Challenge to find the next generation of artists capable of working in the Star Wars universe.
3,888 artists responded the the call, and on May 18th the challenge began with The Moment—imagining key new moments from the Star Wars Episode IV-VI movies.
Only 330 artists were invited to the next phase of the challenge, The Ride, which asked artists to design new Star Wars vehicles.
Then it was down to only 224 artists who qualified for The Job Challenge. A concept art boot camp of 6 mini challenges that tested each artist’s ability to produce work quickly, to receive last minute Director’s changes, and to experience what it is like to work at ILM on a Star Wars project.
After three weeks of back to back challenges, 16 Art Directors from ILM judged the results to narrow the field down to eight finalists. We’re very happy to present the finalists and winners with commentary from ILM Creative Director David “Nak” Nakabayashi and ILM Art Department Senior Manager Jennifer Coronado.

He specialises in character, environment and weapon concept design with a long background of working in the film and games industry. His past companies include Red Engine Studios, Blizzard Entertainment, Hasbro & FireForge.
Now that we have moved into October a new 11 Second Club competition has begun.
As with each month you are tasked with animating a short piece of provided sound using any medium you wish.
This month’s sound clip is a little different, in that it features no dialogue but is a clip of light saber sounds taken from Star Wars.

Cheung is a concept artist and illustrator from the UK and is currently working in Germany for Goodgame Studios.
As a side project Cheung has taken to creating speedart cinematic storyboards for popular video games such as Final Fantasy VII & VIII, Metal Gear Solid & is currently working his way through the entire Mass Effect trilogy.
Baldasseroni is a Lead Character Artist at Riot Games. His fantastic work features in many video game cinematics and film such as Batman Arkham Origins, The Elder Scrolls Online, Thor: The Dark World, Star Wars: The Old Republic & FarCry 3.
Baldasseroni spent 8 years working at Blur Studios and his work has also been featured in highly regarded digital publications and art book such as Ballistic Publishing Expose, d’Atiste & Elemental.
